Celebrating 30 years!

This past year marked Advocates for Children’s 30th year working to protect our community’s children from abuse and neglect. In that time, we have grown... from an organization that started with borrowed staff and space from the Department of Human Services to a vital non-profit with 15 full-time employees serving more than 800 families and 3,000+ children annually.

In 1978, early volunteers came together to identify gaps in services and work to prevent abuse. Their efforts directly and indirectly supported services for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence and youth homelessness, as well as developing education programs for teachers and students that are today known as AFC's Education Program. This pioneering group included David Faulkner, Ray Cook, Dot Larrabee, Brion Gallagher and Mary Ruchinskas (apologies to those not acknowledged here).

Today, AFC helps families solve problems, including meeting basic needs, family violence and mental health; helps prevent problems by teaching skills in parenting, problem solving, dealing with bullying behaviors and conflict resolution; and helps change community
conditions by advocating for children and families.

Advocates for Children is led by caring and committed community members who, like those of 30 years ago, continue to ensure the safety of our children. The needs of families are a priority. Our annual report is dedicated to all who have supported AFC's efforts over the years, by giving their time, financial support and heartfelt commitment to abuse prevention.

Sincerely,

Betsy Norcross Plourde, LMSW, Executive Director
Richard Bois, AFC Board of Directors, Chair
